The demand for entry-level line workers, power plant operators and other positions that require technical knowledge is expected to grow by 9% annually. By 2010, the industry will need 10,000 new, skilled workers due to an aging-out of current workers. By 2050, Florida’s population is expected to top 23.5 million and is fueling a rapid need for trained employees. The Workforce Development Board, in response to this anticipated skill gap, is offering a variety of training programs designed to create a steady pipeline of power and utility workers.

Through the BEST III Grant and partnerships between the Workforce Development Board , the Employ Florida Banner Center for Energy, Indian River Community College and Lake Sumter Community College, the following opportunities are available:

WORK CERTIFIED PROGRAM
Are you under age 21 and have not found the right career yet?  Do you need help knowing how to impress employers and get a good job?  Are you interested in gaining some basic computer knowledge and business applications?  Do you want to learn how to write the resume that lands the job?  Then, attend a 3 week youth-orientated Work Certified training for entry-level skills and become work ready!

DATES:                    May 5 – May 23 and June 2 – June 20
TIME:                       9:00 – 3:30 PM
LOCATION:            South 29 th Street in Fort Pierce
ELIGIBILITY:           Young Adults under 21 years of age
                                  Low income eligibility – documentation will be required
                                  8 th grade test scores (TABE)
COST:                      No cost to attend; tuition is grant funded

Young adults interested attending the Work Certified training, must attend the Orientation to begin the application process and bring with you – pay stubs or other financial means of support of all immediate family members in your household; birth certificate and social security card.

LINE WORKER BOOT CAMP CAREER DAY
Employers- find your next workers with 200 hours of safe work practices, basic electricity and pole climbing skills. Attend the Line Worker Career Day on Wednesday, March 26 from 3 – 6pm at Indian River Community College, Ft. Pierce

LINEWORKER APRENTICESHIP PROGRAM
Through the Fort Pierce Utilities Authority and the City of Vero Beach, employees prepare for advancement in the power and utility industry. The program utilizes cooperative learning, classroom instruction and on-the-job training. The Best III grant assists employers in offering this training to their employees.

ON-THE-JOB TRAINING
Organizations in the power, utilities and telecommunications industries may be eligible to receive grant funds to offset the expense of upgrading the skills of workers to facilitate career progression within the company.
